Writing is a challenge. Are you up for it?

A Letter from the Editor
by Timothy Pike

Dear readers,

Being a writer is challenging work.

If you’re a writer yourself, I’m sure you already know this.

You see, writing is more than just putting a story into words. It’s a journey, not just from idea to published book, but also a journey into yourself, as you summon the willpower to write, the courage to put yourself out there, and the strength to overcome any negative feelings that creep in, such as frustration, fear, and self-doubt.

The authors who feature in this month’s issue are well aware of these challenges, and in their articles, they share with us observations and lessons learned.

Here are a few:

“Often, I had serious doubts about my ability to write. The self-imposed barrier made writing less rewarding. I found out later it is called impostor syndrome, and many authors are afflicted by it.” —Peter Thomas Pontsa, this month’s cover author, in my interview with him

“While so many of us desire to turn our interests into careers, few realize the dangers of bleeding the joy from our choice passions, but there is hope.” —J.M. Shaw, on when writing becomes a job

“Mental health is also a factor with writer’s block. When you’re struggling with writer’s block, it can feel like a combination of self-doubt, perfectionism, anxiety, or even burnout. There are a number of things you can do to navigate through this.” —Doug Lawrence, on reducing stress in your life

“Recently, a person told me she had wanted to write a book for some time but could not start. She had a great story to share but lacked self-belief. Is that you? If so, today is your lucky day. Almost every new author experiences such obstacles.” —Diann Floyd Boehm, on breaking through mental barriers as a writer
